8U: MITES

Format: Cross-Ice

The 8U Mites Division is where young players begin to transition from learning the basics to applying their skills in real game situations. This level offers a balance of development and competition in a fun, energetic environment that reinforces teamwork, effort, and sportsmanship.

Potsdam Junior Hockey Association follows USA Hockey’s American Development Model (ADM), using small-area games and station-based drills to ensure maximum engagement and skill development.

What 8U Players Focus On:

  • Developing stronger skating fundamentals: edge work, starts/stops, stride efficiency

  • Advancing puck control, passing, and shooting techniques

  • Building awareness of positioning and teamwork

  • Practicing in game-like situations through structured cross-ice games and jamborees

Required Equipment

Players must arrive fully dressed and equipped with:

  • Helmet with face mask
  • Mouthguard (recommended)
  • Neck guard
  • Shoulder pads, elbow pads, shin guards
  • Hockey pants, socks, and jersey
  • Skates and stick
  • Labeled water bottle
